The Power of The Holy Spirit (Part 2)

This week, instead of listening to the words of Jesus, we are listening to the words of Apostle Paul.
{Romans 8:9-17}

{Personal story, paraphrased:}

About ten years ago I was watching the commercials for the Super Bowl and saw a Fed Ex advertisement. This particular advertisement stood out to me, so much so that I still remember it ten years later. The advertisement was a spoof from the movie Cast Away. The man had been marooned on an island with one package. Several years went by and he was finally rescued from the island. So much time had passed, yet the Fed Ex employee was determined to still deliver his package. He arrived at the home and handed the package to the woman at the door. She smiled and thanked him, even though the package wasn’t in good condition. He turned away from the house to leave and stopped. He turned around and asked the woman what was in the package this entire time. She said,
“Oh some matches, a fishing pole, a life jacket, knife and some seeds…” The irony here was the man had been marooned on this island for so many years yet never knew that he held these items in his possession. He had no clue had he just opened the package, he would have saved himself a lot of effort.

{End Story}

Although the supplies listed above may have differentiated from the actual commercial, the lesson is still the same. Do you feel marooned on an island? If you do, know that God has already given you supplies to survive. The Holy Spirit resides within you, and has equipped you with everything you need.

What’s In A Name?

a.) Your first name says something about your parents. Your last name says something about your family. Our names say something about who we are. Before chapter 8 of Romans, the Holy Spirit is only mentioned four times. Now, Paul opens up the package of Gods goodness. Paul started using different terms or names for the Holy Spirit.
{Romans 9} In Genesis, the Holy Spirit was mentioned which means God is not saying that the Holy Spirit is only for creation but to live continually in us.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!

If you need something new in your life, if you’re living with a lot of baggage from the past that weighs you down, if you’re feeling cast away, the Holy Spirit is there to bring about something new.
b.) {Romans 9} There are two names mentioned: In this chapter, we’re getting personal with the Holy Spirit of Christ, which puts a face to the relationship with the Holy Spirit. Has Jesus come into your heart? The Holy Spirit comes and enters our heart, and the Spirit of Christ shares Grace greater than your sin. This second name carries another meaning.
c.)

Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[a] his Spirit who lives in you.

*emphasis added
Resurrection Power.

The same power which lives in our heart and can take hold of our life.

If you’re feeling weak, ask the Lord to strengthen you with the Resurrection Power.

Colossians 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

The same power can raise us as well, to life eternal.

Romans 8:12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.

So then we are in debt to live not by the world but by God and for Him to be children of God.
d.) The Spirit of Adoption. We become heirs of God and Joint with Christ. No one is marooned on an island.
Adoption: chosen part of a family. God has chosen you to be a part of His family. We’re adopted as children, not as slaves, contrary to the time period in which this book was written.
e.) The Sprit bears witness that we are His children. He knows our heart and knows for certain our heart is pure in our beliefs. He works continually within us.
f.) By this, we can cry out to Him knowing we are His children.

Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

The Holy Spirit within us speaks to God through us.
g.) We are joint heirs with Christ. Christ’s inheritance is offered to you and me. God has given us a wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit, allowing us to be rescued to be adopted into His family.
What a beautiful gift!
